Statewide Health Information Network of New York (SHIN-NY)

SHIN-NY is a network of information transmitted between users. Like the internet, as more users connect, it grows, evolves, and becomes more secure, efficient and easy to use.

Application Programming Interface (API)

API will allow developers to build new healthcare technology applications on top of the SHIN-NY.  Through this API, innovators and health IT companies can access the clinical information required to develop products that meet healthcare providers’ needs, with the appropriate policies in place. This platform will also help innovators standardize their applications and software, driving development more efficiently across the state and beyond.

Capabilities

The initial capabilities being developed are those related to querying patient record information, access to care plan summaries, and functionality related to secure alerts for physicians and patients. Data includes clinical and administrative information from HIEs (which are made up of hospitals, labs, long-term care providers, community health centers and primary care physicians). In the future, capabilities will include analytics, quality reporting and integration with other APIs, along with the NYS Department of Health and other sources that may be useful to software development firms.

Standardization

NYeC is working to standardize this platform and to develop requirements which will allow companies to build products that conform to state policies. We will provide educational materials and access to the API for those looking to build upon the SHIN-NY.
